THE MAGNIFICENT
I have to apologise for the tardy nature of this review which has been a WIP since Nipper’s stag do in Prague – whilst all and sundry cracked open another and then another beer I contented myself walking the sunny banks of the Vlatava listening to a bunch of then new releases of which was the stand out album. Having since listened to the album on numerous occasions and had the god fortune to witness Jimmy doing a solo set backing the Great St Louis in Bolton and playing drums for That Fucking Tank in Sheffield we certainly have a mercurial talent on our hands. 10 tracks checking in at 32 minutes, all with good melodies catchy choruses and great hooks … but the key differentiator is the vocal delivery of young Islip, a sneering, drunken drawl that puts me in mind of Jamie T which in terms of ambience and sentiment fits the music perfectly. Track 1 Billy Anonymous neatly interweaves a cool guitar hook on the last 2 lines of each verse which invites the vocal and drum response in the chorus, good breakdown with layered vocals and build up to a gutsy guitar break ‘it’s gonna take some time but …..’. Track 2 Party Prince has a real piano Blyth Power Paradise Razed feel to it, slightly different formula and gentler approach that builds to a chorus with good lyrics – some of which are printed on the sleeve (why only these FFS) …give me one good reason and I won’t listen ! Doctor and The Freeze Up has a staccato rhythm and nice popping bass line with simple but very effective reggae chorus with plenty of delay and echo on the guitar. Six Beers also features (in part) on the lyric sheet – really up tempo intro drum roll shifts down gears until that belting ‘Do you remember’ chorus which is the most distinctive on the album – fuckin great, makes you wanna rage with ’a heart like a machine gun’, love it …. Track 5 Search Party is a grower bout ‘growing up too fast’. Broken Record has a catchy chorus and guitar lick which reminds for some reason of Danny by Hooton 3 Car. Citizen X is up next and this is real mix of melodies from that track off Billy Bragg’s Spy versus Spy, the title of which I can’t quite recall. It’s Not Enough is a bit more r’n’r kick about stuff a la New York Dolls and Diana Boredom is similar in a certain way … mmmm not sure why just puts me in mind of Richard Hell / Stiv Bators, which brings us nicely to the final track Lifetime which has a real Clash Bankrobber vibe in the verse with a great chorus line ‘speak about progress ….. it takes a lifetime for you to make a difference only takes one minute to have a good time – drink another and another to the end of the night etc’ even mentions a jailbreak and features on the juxtaposed lyric sheet – great stuff nonetheless. The only disappointing thing about this album is that it had to end …. Click, click and we go again 10/10
