Charge - Perfection Plus (the best of) CD (Anagram)
By Blackpool Rox II (Editor) Issue 9 (2004) submitted

23 tracks tracing the history of Charge with quite a detailed history of their various line ups and releases. Makes interesting reading as it is crafted by the crafty pen of Alex Ogg (se his article elsewhere in this issue) From what I remember they were very much a third wave band (although they trace their roots rather dubiously back to 1977) to their high point in ’82 when they sold 15,000 copies of ‘Destroy the Youth’ and ‘Fashion’ singles. I recognise a lot of the shots on the CD sleeve from Sounds and Vendor’s bedroom wall, and I also learned from the sleeve notes that Stuart Lunn died of cancer in 2003. In terms of Charge their aesthetic impact (men wearing mini skirts) was possibly more memorable than their music – which was ok and had its moments (Kings Cross EP), but was quite poppy/new romantic (especially on the Perfection lp), sort of like a speeded up and more dangerous Duran Duran. In fact on some of the photos they look very much like Duran Duran ! The best part of the album by far is the non-Perfection section and the Kings Cross single from July 1981 is my favourite, and it was good to hear Destroy the Youth after all those years. (6/10)
