  Wherewithal - 3 track Demo
By Blackpool Rox II (Editor) Issue 9 (2004) submitted

3 track demo accompanied with business card, newsletter and pen carrying band’s name – oh the powers of modern marketing. This band are from deepest Hampshire, Farnborough, to be precise. Maybe the newsletter and sentiments on the website (Dick Lucas quotation from RATS I think) invoked positive prejudices in favour of Zoundz, Subhumans, Crass which dealt me a sensation of surprise when I heard the first track – Sixth Form Poetry. I was expecting something altogether more angsty and anarchic than a pleasant pop song with tuneful melodious female vocals – this band are more 10,000 Maniacs than Bodybags .. which is no bad thing as Natalie Marchant’s bewitching vocal delivery could hypnotise even the harshest soul. The song is about the pointlessness of it all – I recommend they should read some Albert Camus ‘absurdism’ and bear in mind the likes of Byron, Shelley and Keats all died young – perhaps your poetry will not get any better ? The fact that you have recognized that existential aspect which afflicts any terrain called reflection and thought is a common conclusion. Track2 is pretty much the same, entitled aah I know this. The Go-Betweens with female vox – enjoyable. Track 3 is lay the blame which evokes the sadness of Belle and Sebastian, and is ideal as a lullaby for young children and those searching in places for answers where there might not be any. info@wherewithalonline.com www.wherewithalonline.com (6/10)
