13 tracks from the big selling sexy glossy magazine. Sick Of It All kick off with the angry shouty and punky ‘Take The Night Off’ off the album ‘Death to Tyrants’. A little more restrained with Tribute to Nothing’s ‘Three Times’ off their ‘Many Times Did we Live’ album, pretty solid vox and guitar work in a slightly rocky Alkaline Trio meets XXX . Sandpaper by Falling Fast is taken from their demo, a sort of gothic sounding Joy Divsionesque dirge with a plodding and repetitive beat. The Scotch Greens’ track ‘Professional’ is from their album on DRT is a quite stripped down punky one with r’n’r offbeats and references to the ‘devil getting his soul’ which belong to the Iggy Pop / Meatloaf territory sonically. Danko Jones are pop darlings these days with 41,000+ profile view on myspace – they owe more to the Rolling Stones and Turbonegro than AC/DC and Kiss as they claim – it’s ok. Ignite’s ‘Bleeding’ gets it back on track a bit more – fast punchy and good vocals (sound like they are singing about something worth singing about) reminds me of later Bad Religion and the chorus is rather like ‘Winning’ by Leatherface – although a pale imitation of course – Ignite are the best so far. Marky Ramone is on next doing a version of one of my fave Beatles’ tracks ‘Nowehere Man’ – gruff vocal approach, what’s the point really (oh dear I will upset all those RAMONES wearing celebs now – ahhh that’s good then). Cult of Luna off the Earache label play ‘Back to Chapel Town’ from the album ‘Somewhere along the Highway’ – a hell of a long intro (a bit Moss Icon’ish) but then it goes downhill. Germinal’s offering is a quiet then loud affair with electro/acoustic mix which sounds like David Bowie meets Department S. Backyard Babies play a rock song that sounds like Thin Lizzy . Miss Black America’s ‘Dot Dot Dot’ is quite tuneful (the second offering off the Ruby Slippers label) and sounds like their angst and elaborate guitar solo it should be making the ‘kids’ rock on MTV 2, whereas Maroon’s metal-goth shouty nonsense ‘Wake Up in Hell’ is awful. NOFX’s ‘seeing double at the triple rock’ is as you would expect. Starts with a neat’ish guitar intro that sounds like Iron Maiden and then ascends/descends on your point of view into the usual chunky / spikey NOFX delivery – quite good as usual. Overall this gets (7/10)
