The Killers - The Day ‘The Killers’ Came to Town ! - Friday 1st September 2006
By Andy Higgins (Blackpool Rox II) Sept 2006 submitted

“It all felt rather like a room was being rented out in your house – ring fenced with a big NO ENTRY sign on the door – and then vacated the next day.” – a docile observer You better believe it - these boys from Las Vegas are ‘big business’ and the non-stop Radio 1 hype machine talking up this event as the biggest gig ever added a certain curiosity value to their visit.During Friday daytime they visited the Pleasure Beach with Jo Whiley – went on a few rides, ate ice cream on North Pier, and stayed over in the Imperial Hotel, and played a gig. The Winter Gardens had more security than a Labour Party Conference, and the chances of locals getting in to throw vegetables and fruit was even slimmer. How did these 4 unassuming, quiet and sensitive souls feel about been harangued around the town and subjected to the media interrogation (‘It’s in the contract – you better be co-operative !’ chirped the Radio 1 d.j.). Meandering molecules in a fluid ignited by the music industry machine, lost souls on the highway to somewhere not of their own making ? Well I guess we won’t really ever know ! What did they think of Blackpool ? I was curious to learn – but they vanished from the crime-scene before the snipers could even get them in their sights. What must it be like to be caught up in the jaws of an out of control media and publicity machine ? Obviously not speaking from personal experience I imagine it’s both pretty exciting, yet also pretty daunting too – no escape. But it would have been interesting to get the chance to ask the question(s) and to find out from some people who are caught up in the maelstrom rather than just to comment/guess from the position of ‘passive observer’. Radio 1 rented a bar and my pal did the DJ’ing, but the Killers didn’t show. We tried to get an opportunity to interview them and show them the review they got in Issue 9 of Blackpool Rox (1/10 for Hot Fuss) but our DNA profiling meant we weren’t allowed within the security perimeter. The following day all was back to normal in down town Blackpool. The security operation was over, the Winter Gardens had experienced another busy night, SJM Promotions made a few more quid, Radio 1 had their live recording due to go out ‘LIVE’ on air on Sunday evening before their calculating ‘gaze’ immediately shifted quickly to the next ‘biggest event of the year’ The live Scissor Sisters concert from Maida Vale on Radio 1’ – déjà vu ? The NO ENTRY sign has been removed. Everything is back to normal – go about your business and forget anything happened.
