Litterbug - Speaking + It´s Not Punk Rock Jim .....
By Phil Smith - landloed records submitted

Litterbug, Blackpool.... by I wanted to write briefly about Litterbug, a local Blackpool band who have been around for ages now. They live at http://www.myspace.com/litterbugblackpool , where you can find all the usual gubbins you might want to find out about a band…they’re on Facebook, Reverbnation etc too & theres loadsa stuff you can download online by them. Anyway, I can’t remember exactly when main man & local music scene lynchpin Stuart Diggle told me he started this particular band, but they were on the first godspunk compilation CD on Pumf roughly around 2003 & I have what I think is a very early demo album from 2004 (in fact, all the stuff I can find by them right now in my collection is now up at http://www.discogs.com/artist/Litterbug ). Stan from Pumf really liked that first batch of stuff, done solo, bedroom demo-stylee on a home multitrack by Stuart. Its kinda OK but I must admit I prefer them as a full band, always I think the plan, which kicked into action not so long afterwards. Stuart always talks about the Ramones & Pixies as his favourite bands (he also has a Ramones tribute band called Sedated) & this is pretty much reflected in the music. Since becoming a full band, with a much-varied line-up over the years, Litterbug have doubtless lost count of the number of gigs they’ve done (just about everywhere with everyone locally, but also a few notable out-of-towners - they are supporting Eddie & the Hotrods in Germany this summer for instance). In fact, they have played derivations of the same songs so many times that I don’t think it would be unfair to say that I’ve found myself switching off a few times over the years…but I shouldn’t have done! Whilst I’m not sure that non-Blackpoolites would leap up & down & declare they’d found the best band ever on first play, they really have proved their worth over time I think. I have long championed their excellent “Speaking Through the Gaps” mini album on JSNTGM from 2005. This featured Andy Higgins from Erase Today & future Radio 2 playlistee Karima Francis, whose presence really enlivened the band at the time & brought a lovely dynamic to things with some powerful drumming & sweet sweet vocals. I only strangely saw them live once in that period, but they were a revelation. As the random occasional demo CDRs hit my doormat and MP3s dropped in my inbox in the years afterwards, with the line-up pruned back to basics, I’ll admit that I went back to the one-eye-open approach to the band. However, last year’s addition to the canon - “Its Punk Rock Jim But Not As We Know It” - is like a best-of, drawing together some of the best material from over the years and some recent belters, running it through the sturdy current line-up & getting it produced by Bob Pook, one of the most prominent local producers (indeed, it might be his best production so far). This apparently went down well at the Rebellion festival last year, tons of the things being shifted out to punk-hungry mohawkers. As is typical here, it got lost in the mountains of CDRs always growing around the back room, but once it eventually got pulled out it got far more than a cursory single play. A heartily enjoyable collection. Indeed, Litterbug’s rep with me has probably only been held at “patchy” by the sheer weight of demos of under-produced versions of the songs sat in the aforesaid piles. So to recap…”Speaking Through the Gaps”…”Its Punk Rock…”…go go go…Eeee, we’d bloomin’ miss ‘em if they weren’t here…can’t wait to see ‘em again now…
