  Gertrude - Gertrude from CD
By Editor Blackpool Rox II (2005) submitted

CD without any sleeve or info. other than track list. Describe themselves as an “Experimental London based outfit”. Female vocal style on track 1 (Jello) initially reminded me of Kate Bush meets the Young Marble Giants. I then realized this is a 4 piece all female outfit consisting of Zoe, Dawn, Iona and Ayesha. Track 2 is very like Wire (Pink Flag era) angst meets a potentially better moment from Blur’s back catalogue and is quite excellent. 22 mixed and varied tracks on this CD. Scanning their website they position themselves in the post-punk landscape and infect oddballs and misfits with their difficult to pigeonhole sound – track 3 has what sounds like a sax on it, or is it some woodwind contrivance ? A lot of anti-mainstream sentiment, feminist links and merchandise via active distro – the mosaic is now coming more into focus. Reviews in NME and Organ. Irreverant, colourful and more tuneful than the Slits. They are currently working on their second album “Slow and Steady Wins the Race”, and I now discover that this CD is really a compilation of their first album “Up The Wrong Tree” and singles “She Bangs She Boom” “Pop Psychology” and “Dirty Windows” – the observer and the observations he makes are part of one process here .. let’s see how we progress. I agree with the possible Cardigans and Raincoats similarities, less with the Sonic Youth comparison … they do sound very English (which is quite non emptyV these days). Out of Focus sounds like “Everything But The Girl” whereas “What Would you Say” is more chaotic a la Fall. A mixed aural assault and well worth checking out … perhaps I will given the opportunity to do so (7.5/10)
